REBATES FOR HOMEOWNERS AND RENTERS

Rebates are essentially a discount on home improvements. The discount may be included at the point of sale, or paid through reimbursement after submitting a request. Many states, local governments, tribes, utilities, and manufacturers offer rebates. These may cover energy efficiency, electrification, panel upgrades, and alternative energy. In some cases, rebates are supported by federal funding, though in these instances they are usually distributed at the state or local level.

Quick tip: Make sure you review the program requirements to qualify for rebates. Not following the requirements or procedures could prevent consumers from accessing rebates. For example, some rebate programs require the homeowner or renter to use a licensed contractor. Additionally, the programs may require residents to obtain a permit in advance of any work. And some rebate programs require specific technologies or that the company manufacture in the United States. Navigators should understand these requirements, or connect with a third-party expert who has a greater understanding of the program.
